Jonathan Creasy: New Word Order

New Word Order is a print journal produced in UCD, by UCD Creative Writing students in the Literary Editorship module. Under the executive editorship of Dr. Jonathan C. Creasy (UCD, New Dublin Press, Writing Ireland, Publishing Ireland), the class acts as a professional Editorial Board, moving from acquisitions and submissions all the way through the editorial process, production, publication, and a public launch.

This is a hands-on, practice- and industry-based module that gives students real-world experience in editing and publishing. The module features guest speakers from the publishing industry and field trip visits to leading independent Irish publishing houses, designers, and printers.

Issue XI (pictured) marked the first collaboration with our industry partner, Distinctive Repetition, one of the leading print design studios in Ireland. Through this collaboration, the print and design quality of the journal has reached new heights, and students have had the opportunity to engage with professional level project management and execution.

Issue XII (forthcoming) marks yet another leap for New Word Order. With the generous support of UCD’s School of English, Drama, and Film, the Mary Lavin Centre for Creative Writing, and a Communities of Practice grant from the Creative Futures Academy, the New Word Order team has engaged in a productive exchange with NCAD, the Distillers Press, and Distinctive Repetition, and we will publish NWO XII on June 13 in UCD, with featured writer Maggie Armstrong. The journal will receive national and international distribution.

New Word Order is an ambitious project rooted in practice-as-research, industry-based teaching and learning, and hands-on creativity that gives students unique insights into the real world of editing, design, and publishing.
