About

The Cultural Imaginaries of Just Transitions project is run by Principal Investigator Dr Treasa De Loughry, co-investigator, Dr Sharae Deckard, and research assistant Caleb O’Connor. It is funded by UCD’s Humanities Institute, and is located within the College of Arts and Humanities Environmental Humanities Research Strand.

Running from 2022-2024, this project takes a two-strand approach to the research topic:

1) pedagogy: we are interested in further intra- and interdisciplinary conversations on the teaching of major ecological challenges, including just transitions, as we grapple with the tremendous urgency of transforming global socio-ecological relations in light of the accelerating and unequal consequences of human-induced climate change. This has and will include a cross-college coffee morning, invited speakers and workshops, and tours of sustainable initiatives on campus. We will also host a workshop in 2024 on pedagogies of degrowth.

2) critical literary symposium: in June 2024 we will host a one day event on the Cultures of Energy Transitions bringing together Irish and international based scholars to interrogate the mediation of past, present and future renewable energy transitions; probing what sustainable futures are being imagined in just transitionary discourse, through what cultural forms and tropes, and for whom. Further details will be available on our event page.

Outputs include regular keyword blogposts written by our Research Assistant Caleb O’Connor.
