On October 15th 2022, I helped to organise Broadside Extra: news, songs and provocations in the history of cheap print and street literature. This free one-day conference was a joint endeavour with the Traditional Song Forum and the Centre for Critical Media Literacy at TU Dublin, supported by Poetry Ireland, An Góilín Traditional Singers, and the Irish Traditional Music Archive. I was honoured to co-chair with Steve Roud, the renowned ballad scholar and the man behind the Roud index of folk songs. My paper was on women in the ballad trade in Ireland, and I’ll be sharing some of my findings in future posts. The conference proceedings are archived here.
