Talk at the University of Aberdeen

As PI of the Drinking Cultures project, Lucy Cogan was delighted to be invited to speak to the University of Aberdeen’s Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies on the topic “The Drunken Irishman: Defining a Nation in Early-Nineteenth Century Literature” on February 11, 2025. The institute is designed to promote research into the languages, histories and literatures of Ireland and Scotland, and their respective diasporas. Lucy’s paper discussed the cultural connection between drunkenness and Irish identity in literature (particularly the writings of Gerald Griffin) in the context of the political campaign for Catholic Emancipation.
