(Did you know that even Peig Sayers, that towering figure of Irish literature, was literate only in English, despite being a native Irish speaker?) I can find only two other records of this text. There is a copy in the Potter and Williams Collection on Irish Culture (Broadside Ballads) at Providence Public Libraries, and the ballad scholar Hugh Shields (1929-2008) offered reprints of this and two other Christmas carols in issue 22 of <a href=\"https:\/\/folkmusicsocietyofireland.wordpress.com\/test-ct-page-2\/\"><em>Ceol T\u00edre<\/em><\/a>, the Folk Music Society of Ireland\u2019s newsletter, in October 1982. I am trying to locate his source for the carol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I tweeted about this text last Christmas and got a wonderful response from @aransongs, aka Deirdre N\u00ed Chonghaile, an ethnomusicologist whose recent book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/uwpress.wisc.edu\/books\/5119.htm\">Collecting Music in the Aran Islands, A Century of History and Practice<\/a><\/em>  is a worth having on your song studies shelf or borrowing from your library. Deirdre generously sent me her brilliant &#8216;first pass&#8217; on a translation of the text into modern Irish. We agreed that it is most likely Donegal or Ulster Irish, so if you&#8217;re a native speaker from the North, you might be able to lend us a hand or two!
