We are delighted to announce that registration is now open for the \u201cDangerous Pleasures\u201d interdisciplinary conference presented by the \u201cDrinking Cultures\u201d project in conjunction with the \u201cWomen & Alcohol\u201d research strand of the Drinking Studies Network. The conference will take place on 19-20 June 2025<\/strong> in the Museum of Literature, Dublin, Ireland.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Registration\u00a0is free. Please register using this link by 31 March 2025.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunch and refreshments will be provided during the day on both days.\u00a0

At this conference, speakers will consider the perceived dangers of women\u2019s drinking and drunkenness but also the pleasures associated with it. What counts as \u2018dangerous\u2019 shifts over time but constructions of harmful pleasure are usually gendered in ways that are culturally and historically specific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women\u2019s pleasure has traditionally been treated as something to be contained or subjugated to responsibilities within the home and to the larger society. As such, it is often considered dangerous, to family, to community, to nation. Across the world, the disruptive potential and threat of women\u2019s pleasure is often intertwined with alcohol. Against this background, the medicalisation of alcohol consumption further impacted societal attitudes towards women\u2019s drinking in particular and often limiting terms. In some countries, legislation or more informal legal interventions by police, were also gendered and further policed women\u2019s pleasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
